My First Hyperbaric Experience – What It Really Felt Like

Trying HBOT Hyperbaric Chamber

I have to admit, despite not being claustrophobic at all I did feel a little apprehensive the very first time I tried Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Being zipped into a chamber sounded a bit more “sci-fi” than I was prepared for! But the whole experience turned out to be completely intriguing, educational and far more relaxing than I expected.

From the moment I stepped inside, every step was explained clearly. One of the biggest surprises for me was learning that the pressure inside the chamber has to be built up gradually. I honestly thought you got in, zipped up and off you go – but it’s not quite that simple.

To begin with, the chamber slowly increases pressure over the first 5–10 minutes. This gradual change allows your ears and sinuses to equalise, which prevents discomfort. It feels a lot like:

  • going up in an aeroplane (your ears pop slightly), or
  • descending during a scuba dive

Personally, I was absolutely fine, just a few little pops, no pain at all. Your operator will discuss this with you beforehand so you know exactly what to expect. Once the correct pressure is reached, you can then put on your oxygen mask and settle in for your session.

It Gets Warmer Than You Expect

Another thing you wouldn’t necessarily imagine is that it can get quite warm inside the chamber. This is completely normal and happens due to the compressed air. The good news is there’s a temperature gauge and a manual fan inside, so you can adjust things to stay perfectly comfortable.

A Fascinating Look at What’s Really Going On

One of my biggest “wow” moments was learning just how different the oxygen environment is inside the chamber. The air we normally breathe contains only 21% oxygen. Inside the hyperbaric chamber it is likely I was breathing almost 100% oxygen, at a pressure around 2–3 times higher than normal atmospheric pressure.  Think of it like an ‘oxygen supplement’... The extra oxygen reacts with glucose in the body to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the principal molecule for storing and transferring energy in cells. This stored energy can then be used for future reactions, giving the body extra capacity to fight disease, accelerate the healing of injuries, and improve overall health and vitality.

This combination dramatically increases the amount of oxygen your blood can absorb. The technical explanation comes from Henry’s Law which states that the amount of gas dissolved in a liquid (like oxygen in your blood plasma) is directly proportional to the pressure of that gas. If you’d like to explore the science, here’s a helpful overview:
Henry’s Law reference.

What does that mean inside your body? It means your blood becomes super-oxygenated, allowing oxygen to reach areas with poor circulation, damaged tissues or chronic wounds flooding them with the essential fuel they need for repair and regeneration.

  • Settling In and Relaxing: Once the session was underway, I felt surprisingly calm. You can simply chill out, close your eyes, listen to music, or even work on a laptop if you want to. It’s very much your time.  The operator checked in on me at regular intervals, which made me feel completely safe and cared for. The whole experience feels private, supported and very soothing.
  • How I Felt Afterwards: When I came out of the chamber, I can honestly say I felt refreshed and light however a single session wont be-changing although some people do feel a dramatic shift straight away.  The benefits come when you take regular HBOT and of course the science behind HBOT is solid and the medical studies absolutely reinforce the benefits of repeated sessions.

For me, the first session was not just physically interesting,  it was reassuring, relaxing and genuinely exciting. It confirmed why I chose to bring this technology to Cryojuvenate. I can’t wait for our clients to experience it too.

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a non-invasive, painless specialised oxygen therapy. It is used around the world for medical, wellness and sports-related issues and conditions, to help the body to repair, recover and rejuvenate.  The amount of oxygen dissolved in the body has long been known to be directly proportional to the pressure surrounding the body and the pressure of the air breathed. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing pressurised oxygen in a controlled and safe chamber. This increase in pressure is scientifically proven to increase the body’s absorption of greater amounts of oxygen into the bloodstream.

In simple terms: More oxygen = more healing, more energy, better recovery, and better health.

This therapy has been used for decades, from elite sports to medical wound healing, and is now one of the fastest-growing bio-hacking tools worldwide.

A Brief History of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

HBOT (as its know in short terms) might feel like cutting-edge technology, but the concept actually dates back to the 1600s, when early scientists first experimented with the therapeutic use of pressure (co-incidentially by a Physician called HENSHAW in 1662).

By the 19th century, doctors were using pressurised environments to treat respiratory issues. HBOT continued evolving throughout the 20th century, becoming formally recognised for decompression sickness (the “bends”) and carbon monoxide poisoning. Since then, the research has expanded dramatically. Today HBOT is used internationally to support:

With the help of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, more oxygen can be supplied to your plasma, cerebral spinal fluid (the fluid that surrounds the brain and spine), the central nervous system fluids, the lymph system and bones. The increased delivery of oxygen has been shown to help with:

  • Improved energy levels and tissue function / New Tissue
  • Regeneration and renewal (your body and its organs and organ systems)
  • New blood vessels
  • Reduced inflammation / Reduced pain
  • Improved and enhanced immune function
  • Post-surgical recovery
  • Sports injuries
  • Neurological health
  • Longevity and anti-ageing

For those who love the science, you can explore a comprehensive overview of modern HBOT uses in this review published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (2021): read more here.

Who Uses Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

The beauty of HBOT is that it can benefit almost everyone. Around the world, it is used by:

  • Athletes & Sports Professionals: For improved recovery, reduced inflammation, faster healing, and enhanced performance.
  • Wellness Enthusiasts & Bio-hackers: For boosting cellular energy (ATP), mitochondrial function, cognitive clarity, and overall vitality.
  • Busy Professionals & Everyday Wellness Seekers: Those looking for better sleep, sharper focus, enhanced immunity, and an overall feeling of wellbeing.
  • Individuals with Long-Term Health Challenges: While we do not diagnose or treat medical conditions at Cryojuvenate, many people internationally use HBOT as support for: Long-term fatigue l Persistent inflammation l Recovery from injury l High-stress lifestyles l Post-viral fatigue
  • Anti-Ageing & Skin Health Clients: HBOT is often used for: Skin rejuvenation l Increased collagen production l Improved circulation lFaster recovery from cosmetic procedures

A study in the journal Aging suggests HBOT may support improved cognitive function and even cellular-level anti-ageing markers. You can explore that research here

Why We Chose Henshaw Hyperbarics, The UK’s Leading Supplier

Henshaw Hyperbaric HBOT chamber

At Cryojuvenate, I only invest in technology I completely believe in – equipment that delivers results, meets rigorous safety standards, and enhances the experience of our clients.  After extensive research, Henshaw stood out for three key reasons:

  • Safety & Quality: Henshaw are leaders in the UK HBOT industry, known for their engineering, safety and reliability. They have ISO 9001 Accreditation and their chambers are made use medical grade materials.
  • Comfort & Client Experience: Our new Recline 1.4 ATA model allows you to sit comfortably (not lie flat), making sessions deeply relaxing and more accessible.
  • Proven Effectiveness: Their oxygen delivery and chamber pressure are designed to significantly enhance tissue oxygenation and healing potential.

What Does 1.4 ATA Mean?

HBOT Hyperbaric Oxygen pressure diagram

ATA stands for “atmospheres absolute”,  a measurement of pressure. At 1.0 ATA you are at normal atmospheric pressure at sea level. Our chamber operates at 1.4 ATA, which is approximately the pressure your body would experience a few metres below sea level.  One atmosphere absolute, or 1 ATA, is the average atmospheric pressure exerted at sea level. So if a therapist carried out a one-hour HBOT session at 2 ATA, the user would be breathing 100% oxygen for one hour, while at 2 times the atmospheric pressure at sea level.

This increase in pressure allows your body to absorb far more oxygen than it can at normal atmospheric pressure. The result?

  • Enhanced healing
  • Deeper oxygen delivery
  • A noticeable boost in wellbeing for many clients

What About the Oxygen?

At normal air pressure, our oxygen-carrying cells (red blood cells) are saturated and therefore cannot carry any more oxygen that may be introduced into our bodies.  During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, the body is gently placed under pressure, creating an environment where oxygen can dissolve directly into the blood, tissue, and other bodily fluids, thereby increasing oxygen levels in the cells, allowing for enhanced energy availability over time. Inside the chamber you breathe high-purity oxygen (with nitrogen removed). This is delivered via a comfortable mask and is completely safe and non-invasive.  Your blood plasma becomes saturated with oxygen, allowing it to:

  • Reach areas that may struggle with circulation
  • Support tissue repair
  • Increase energy production
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Stimulate healthy cell turnover

How Many Sessions Are Recommended?

Most clients begin to feel benefits within 3–5 sessions, but deeper, longer-lasting changes usually occur over 10–40 sessions depending on your goals. As a general guide:

  • Wellness & energy: 1–2 sessions weekly
  • Sports recovery: 2–3 sessions weekly during training blocks
  • Fatigue & inflammation support: 10–20+ sessions
  • Skin health & anti-ageing: 8–12 sessions over 4–8 weeks

We will guide you based on your aims and how your body responds.

What are the physiological benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBOT) Therapy increases the amount of oxygen your body can absorb, helping it repair, regenerate, and function at its best. Here’s how HBOT supports health and wellbeing:

  • Increased Energy & Faster Recovery: HBOT boosts cellular energy, helping tissues repair more efficiently. With regular sessions, clients often experience better vitality, improved healing, and enhanced resilience against illness.
  • Enhanced Skin, Collagen & Tissue Repair: By delivering higher levels of oxygen, HBOT activates fibroblasts—the cells responsible for producing collagen. This supports healthier skin, stronger connective tissues, and improved bone, cartilage, and organ health.
  • New Blood Vessel Formation: Increased oxygen availability encourages the development of new blood vessels (angiogenesis). This is particularly beneficial for injuries, chronic wounds, and tissue damage caused by ageing, diabetes, or events such as heart attacks or brain injuries.
  • Reduced Inflammation: HBOT boosts cellular metabolism and ATP production, accelerating the body’s natural healing processes. Higher oxygen saturation also improves white blood cell activity, helping reduce swelling, fight bacteria, and promote faster tissue repair.
  • Natural Pain Reduction: Thanks to its anti-inflammatory effects, HBOT can relieve pain without the side effects associated with medication. It is a supportive therapy for chronic pain, injury recovery, and inflammatory conditions.
  • Stronger Immune Function: HBOT increases the oxygen available to immune cells, helping them respond more effectively to infection. This enhanced immune support is valuable when oxygen levels in the body are compromised or during times of illness or recovery.

HBOT is known to support a wide range of wellness goals, including

  • Enhanced Recovery & Reduced Inflammation: Extra oxygen can help speed up tissue repair, especially useful for athletes or those with chronic inflammation.
  • Improved Cognitive Function: Studies indicate HBOT may support memory, focus, and brain oxygenation.
  • Immune Support: Increased oxygen strengthens the immune system and supports the body’s natural healing processes.
  • Better Sleep & Stress Reduction: Many users report deeper sleep and improved stress resilience.
  • Skin Health & Anti-Ageing: Improved oxygenation supports collagen production and cellular rejuvenation.
  • Performance & Endurance: Athletes often use HBOT to accelerate recovery and improve stamina.

Contraindications: Who Should Not Use Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

While Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is considered a safe and non-invasive wellness treatment for many people, it is not suitable for everyone. At Cryojuvenate, your safety is our top priority, so we carry out a short medical questionnaire before every session. The information below is a general guide only and does not replace individual medical advice. If you have any health concerns or pre-existing conditions, please speak to your GP or healthcare professional before booking.

Relative Contraindications (Require Medical Advice First)

The following situations may still be compatible with HBOT but require medical clearance from your GP or specialist before you can use the chamber.  I am also happy to say we will have the backing of HBOT experts

  • Chronic respiratory conditions such as COPD, emphysema or significant asthma
  • Active ear, nose or sinus infections or any issue that makes it difficult to equalise pressure
  • Recent ear surgery or ongoing ear problems (e.g. perforated eardrum, grommets, history of barotrauma)

What to Wear & What to Bring to Your First Hyperbaric Session

If you’re planning your first Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy session, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s a very simple and comfortable experience. There’s no special preparation needed, but here are a few helpful tips to make your session even smoother.  Comfort is key. You’ll be reclining comfortably inside the chamber, so choose clothing that lets you relax fully:

  • Loose, breathable clothing such as leggings, joggers, gym wear or a soft T-shirt.
  • Avoid bulky layers, as the chamber may feel slightly warm due to air compression.
  • No restrictive belts or tight waistbands, so you can recline comfortably.
  • Minimal jewellery – small items are fine, but anything large or loose is best removed.

What happens during an HBOT session?

  • There are several stages during a typical therapy session.
  • The first stage is compression, in which the chamber is pressurised to the required pressure
  • You may feel warm for a few minutes at the start of your therapy
  • You may feel a slight pressure in your ears or sinuses during the session.
  • You will be guided by your HBOT therapist to relieve any discomfort
  • The chamber is maintained at this pressure (depth) whilst you breathe in the oxygen for the length of time prescribed in your programme (60 – 90
    minutes).
  • You may feel sleepy during your therapy.
  • The chamber is then depressurised, and your session is finished .
  • You may feel cool and slightly tired at the end of your therapy
